Percentages

Understand percent as a rate per hundred, convert between forms, and solve everyday aptitude questions.

Learning objective

Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, then calculate a percentage of a quantity.

01

What does percent mean?

Percent means “per hundred.” So 25% means 25 out of every 100, which is the fraction 25/100 or 1/4.

Example

12% = 12/100 = 0.12

02

Find a percentage of a number

Write the percentage as a decimal, then multiply by the quantity. This keeps the calculation direct.

Example

15% of 240 = 0.15 × 240 = 36

03

Use a convenient fraction

For common percentages, a fraction can make mental arithmetic quicker. For example, 25% is one quarter.

Example

25% of 84 = 84 ÷ 4 = 21
